The word is out

UPDATE: The launch of Meatless Monday McGill (MMM) on Oct 4 at Carrefour Sherbrooke and New Rez was a great success. We received a lot of student support for MMM, with 94 students making a pledge to eat meatless every Monday, and another 25 pledging to give it a try on Oct 11. 5 brave souls pledged to eat meat – we are trying to acknowledge students’ freedom and encourage them to make their own decisions. Add all these pledges to the hundred or so already made this year following the start of the campaign in the other cafeterias, and we have a growing movement.

The launch at BMH, RVC, and Douglas on September 13th went great, with over 150 students giving us their feedback and many pledging to eat meatless every Monday. Soon the survey and pledge responses will be tallied and put up online.

Posters and tabletents were about to educate students about MMM, and some changes to the menu made going without meat that much easier. Missed out last Monday? Not to worry, these residences will now have Meatless Mondays the first Monday of every month, as well as every Monday through the end of September.

Also, October 4th will mark the start of MMM at New Rez and Carrefour Sherbrooke, which will also have Meatless Mondays on the first Monday of every month.

The time has come for the launch of Meatless Monday McGill. September 13th will be the first of many weekly Meatless Mondays at the RVC, BMH, and Douglas dining halls. Along with additional delicious veggie options, informative table stands, posters, and student representatives will be around the cafs to spread the word about MMM, receive feedback, and answer questions.

Later this month, MMM will launch at New Rez and Carrefour Sherbrooke as well. The launch date will soon be determined – keep your ears to the streets.

We need your help!

To have a successful launch we will need the help of lots of caring and enthusiastic volunteers. The most pressing need is for volunteers to table in the dining halls on September 13th. This will involve promoting MMM, fielding questions, encouraging students to take the online survey, and, most importantly, engaging students in active dialogue about food choices. If you think you might be available at any point that day and would like to come out, your help would be hugely appreciated.

Please sign up here: http://www.doodle.com/eivcme9sabbzvm4e and then send an email to meatlessmcgill@gmail.com so I have your contact info. One hour, two hours, or all day, whatever you can offer is sure to help as we have three dining halls to cover. You will receive a free meal of veggie delights, or meat if you like.

MMM Is Growing

Cooperation between students and McGill Food and Dining Services, along with recently awarded funding from the Sustainability Projects Fund are all helping to move Meatless Monday McGill forward.

Next fall, the campaign will spread to BMH and Douglas Hall in addition to the RVC dining hall. New Rez and Carrefour Sherbrooke may also be included depending upon the response of McGill’s new food service provider, Aramark. Student feedback will be key to determining the future of the campaign beyond September.

If you are interested in getting involved with the campaign this summer or next fall, we would love to have your help. Just add a comment or drop us a line at meatlessmcgill@gmail.com.

A trial campaign was held in the RVC dining hall on April 12 and continued the following Monday. Unfortunately (depending on your perspective) the semester ended that week, but the trial campaign will help plan for next year’s expansion of Meatless Monday at McGill.

Students had their opinions heard and provided us with their support. It is my pleasure to announce that 67 people pledged to eat meatless that Monday, and 40 pledged to do so every Monday!
